Bentonite plays a significant role in water treatment, primarily manifested in the following aspects:

1.adsorb heavy metal ions

Bentonite effectively adsorbs heavy metal ions such as mercury, lead, nickel, copper,

and zinc from wastewater through ion exchange and surface functional group

interactions.Following acid activation, modification, or composite processing with other materials, adsorption performance is significantly enhanced, substantially reducing heavy metal concentrations and enabling wastewater to meet discharge standards.

2.Treatment of textile dyeing and printing wastewater

Bentonite can adsorb dye molecules and organic pollutants from textile dyeing wastewater, achieving a decolourisation rate of up to 90% for acidic cationic dye effluent and a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate exceeding 97%. It may also function as a flocculant to promote particle sedimentation, thereby enhancing treatment efficiency.

3. Removal of nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants

Modified bentonite can adsorb nitrogen and phosphorus compounds in wastewater, such as phosphates and ammonia nitrogen, through electrostatic attraction and other mechanisms, thereby reducing the risk of eutrophication in water bodies.

4. Treatment of oily wastewater

Organically modified bentonite generates hydrophobic groups that adsorb and remove organic pollutants such as petroleum hydrocarbons from wastewater, achieving

removal rates exceeding 89.3% for petroleum substances.

5. Improve water clarity

The stable suspension formed by bentonite in water enables suspended particles to settle, thereby clarifying the water. This process is suitable for treating turbid industrial wastewater.

Bentonite, with its substantial specific surface area, cation exchange capacity and adsorption properties, serves as an “invisible guardian” in water treatment.

Through modification techniques that further enhance its performance, it finds extensive application in various scenarios such as industrial wastewater, dyeing effluent and oily wastewater, effectively reducing pollutant levels and safeguarding aquatic environments.
